Over the past few months, I have found myself scrolling my social media timelines in search of as much information on improving my physical fitness as I could find. One of the facts that presented itself most interesting to me was doing a dead hang at the end of my work out.
What is a dead hang? Essentially it is just dangling vertically from a bar with no added support from your muscles or other exterior objects. As you’re just hanging there, gravity will do what it does and lengthen your body out.
There are many benefits to doing this, some of which include:
- Spinal Decompression
- Improved shoulder mobility
- Improved posture
- Greater core strength and grip strength
So many of us, myself included, find ourselves spending the vast majority of our day in one position: sitting. Not only that, we are often sitting in positions that include slouching and leaning. All of which is TERRIBLE for our spines.
It goes without mentioning that our spine is one of the key parts in our body’s ability to support itself. Making it a necessary component to consider when we discuss the general fitness and wellness of our body.
As we all walk on our journey of fitness and wellness, I would like to challenge you. At the end of your workout, find a bar, cling to it, and hang there.
Currently, I tend to tap out after around 60 seconds. The goal is to make it to 5 minutes, though.
Try this out, and let me know what it does for you. I will be posting my updates as time progresses.
